Break/Fix vs. Managed IT Services

Break/Fix vs. Managed IT Services

Know the difference between break/fix and managed IT services? Want to have a proactive approach to managing your technology in 2016? We can help you determine what the best fit is for your situation and budget.

Break/Fix Model

The break/fix IT service model is the traditional approach to managing your IT service.

  1. You have a technology problem such as loss of Internet connectivity, your computer gets a virus, it crashes with a “Blue Screen of Death,” etc.
  2. You contact your IT department or service provider to report the issue.
  3. A technician is scheduled to work on the issue at your office or to work on the issue remotely.
  4. The technician troubleshoots and corrects the problem.
  5. You are billed for the work performed.

This model of service can be acceptable if:

  • Your organization rarely has technology issues.
  • Your budget allows for fluctuating and unpredictable costs based on what unexpected IT problems arise.
  • You have a dedicated IT staff on-site or you have some tech-savvy people on staff that can handle many of the IT problems you do have.

Managed Service Model

Managed services are proactive, with preventative IT maintenance & support.

  1. You have a technology problem such as loss of Internet connectivity, your computer gets a virus, it crashes with a “Blue Screen of Death,” etc.
  2. Your IT service provider is notified by monitoring tools before or the moment an issue arises.
  3. A technician promptly reviews the alert and begins to diagnose the issue–frequently without you even having to contact them.
  4. The issue will either be resolved remotely if possible, or you will be contacted to regarding the need for an on-site visit.

Under the managed IT services model, your IT infrastructure is actively monitored 24/7/365 and issues are commonly addressed before they impact your productivity.

With managed IT services, you can expect a higher level of service:

  • Your systems are monitored 24/7/365.
  • Common software is proactively patched to fix security issues or bugs.
  • Your staff are more productive because your systems are being regularly maintained, updated, patched, and monitored.
  • Many issues are resolved before they cause downtime or you notice an issue.
  • Costs are more predictable.  Many common issues can be covered under a managed service contact with your IT service provider.
