What is the SDVOSB Program?
The SDVOSB program was established under the US Small Business Administration’s Veterans Benefits Act to support the entrepreneurial endeavors of US military veterans who received a disability during their service. The program recognizes the sacrifices made by armed services members and provides them with opportunities to succeed in the business world. To qualify, a business must be at least 51% owned and controlled by service-disabled veterans.
SDVOSB owners receive business-development guidance and resources. They’re also given priority access to some federal contracting opportunities, and various federal agencies reserve some contracts exclusively for SDVOSBs to promote their participation in government contracting.
Who is a service-disabled veteran?
A service-disabled veteran has a disability that was incurred or aggravated while serving in the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. To be considered a Service-Disabled Veteran, the veteran must have an adjudication letter from the Veterans Administration (VA) and Department of Defense (DoD).
How does a business qualify for participation in the SDVOSB program?
The following criteria determine eligibility:
- The service-disabled veteran must have a service-connected disability as determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs or Department of Defense.
- The business must be defined as “small” under the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).
- The business (or its stock) must be at least 51% owned by one or more service-disabled veterans.
- Management and daily operations must be controlled by one or more service-disabled veterans, or, in the case of severe disability, their permanent caregiver.
- The business’s highest officer position must be held by a service-disabled veteran.
