Frequently asked questions
What is the cloud, and how can I benefit?
The cloud is a network of servers that stores your data and runs your applications, instead of you storing and installing everything on your own devices. You access your files and applications through a web browser like Apple Safari, Google Chrome, or Microsoft Edge.
Cloud servers are in secure facilities around the world. The big three cloud service providers are Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). But smaller-scale cloud environments can be created with locally stored remote servers.
The cloud provides many benefits:
- Productivity: Because you're not connected to local servers or hardware, you can work anywhere, anytime, on any device. For example, you can work on one computer, shut it down and go to another location, open a different computer, and resume working on the document where you left off.
- Speed and security: You don’t need to install software and data on your devices because it’s stored and runs from the remote server. Therefore, it runs more quickly and gets updated automatically — you don’t need to keep track of anything or take any actions. Since software updates include security fixes, this keeps your risk of cyberattacks and downtime low.
- Reduced costs: The cloud reduces the capital expense element of IT because much of the infrastructure is provided virtually over the internet. There’s no need to purchase servers and storage drives, software, communication tools, or cybersecurity solutions. Instead, you can move these to operational expenses with pay-as-you-go service plans. These are much more flexible, cost-effective, and never become obsolete.
- Other savings: You'll have less IT equipment in your office, so you’ll need less space and infrastructure to maintain it, because it’s all in the cloud and managed by your cloud provider.
What is virtualization? What is VoIP?
Virtualization is the process of using cloud-based software to replicate hardware functionality. This results in a simulated computing or communication environment, where an operating system, application, storage drive, telephone, or other piece of technology is represented on your screen but does not need to exist physically at your location. See the previous answer for how this reduces costs.
VoIP, or Voice over internet protocol, is a virtualized telephone system where voice, video, and other types of data are transmitted over a cloud network instead of a traditional wired telephone exchange. VoIP phone systems are also known as cloud-hosted telephones. The user experience is very similar to traditional telephones except that VoIP sound quality is superior, it’s far cheaper, and there are a multitude of functions that are unavailable with traditional phones.
What about moving to the cloud? How long will it take? When will we see the benefits?
Do you do Office 365/Microsoft 365 migrations?
Yes, we have extensive experience designing, implementing, migrating, and managing Microsoft’s cloud platforms. Our Seattle cloud services let you choose the option that makes the most sense for your organization, including moving from a traditional on-premises network to Microsoft 365.
