CAT8 Cabling?

TIA TR-42 Telecommunications Cabling Systems Engineering Committee approved the ANSI/TIA-568-C.2-1 specifications for Cat8 cabling systems. We will have 25 and 40 Gigabit Ethernet standards for backbone systems within the data center. The new standard is a big jump in supporting rapidly evolving networks like rack-level interconnects or in leaf-spine topologies.

What is CAT8 Cabling?

Snapshot of CAT8 Cabling Specifications

Category 8

  • Frequency: 2000MHz
  • Maximum Data Rate: 25GBase-T, 40GBase-T
  • Distance: 30 meters
  • Cable Construction: Shielded
  • Connector Type: Class I: RJ45, Class II: Non-RJ45

Category 8 will become the best choice for rack-level interconnect in the data center. It will not have the 100 meters range accustomed to which means it will not support centralized switching with passive patch-panels at row level. Data centers will need to rethink hierarchical switching and most likely adopt a flatter topology distributed or mesh approach.
